〜ことだし ・ ことだし

Meaning
- since ~ (among other things) — citing one reason, often as a gentle justification for a decision or suggestion
Key sentence
雨も降っていることだし、今日は家にいよう。
It's raining, among other things, so let's just stay home today.
Formation
| Attaches to | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Plain clause (Verb/い-adj plain; な-adj + な; Noun + の/である) | [plain clause] + ことだし | もう遅いことだし |
When: Presents the reason as one of several, softening the conclusion; the main clause is usually a decision, suggestion, or volitional.
Examples
連休でもあることだし、少し休もう。
It's a long weekend too, so let's take a bit of a rest.
体調も良くなったことだし、そろそろ仕事に戻ります。
My health has recovered, among other things, so I'll be getting back to work soon.
Easily confused with
ことだから ことだから predicts from someone's known character ('knowing X, surely ~'); ことだし offers a circumstance as soft grounds for a decision ('since ~, let's ~'), usually one reason among several. し し simply stacks coordinate reasons; ことだし packages one circumstance as the (often understated) justification leading to a conclusion.
Notes
- The implication is 'this and other reasons' — rarely the single decisive cause.
