When you can't use it

Don't stack it on a verb that is already potential. ×読よめることができる is wrong — choose one: 読よめる or 読よむことができる.

Easily confused with

potential verb (〜える/〜られる) The potential form (読よめる, 食たべられる) means the same 'can' but is shorter and far more common in speech. ことができる is the longer, more formal phrasing and is also how you say 'can' for a noun activity (N+ができる).
