When you can't use it
- ように here means 'so that / make it so'; with a negative verb it asks the listener to *arrange things so they don't ~* — implying ongoing care, not a single action. (For a one-off 'don't do it now,' use 〜ないでください.)
Easily confused with
〜てはいけない ないようにしてください is a soft request to *try to avoid* something (effort, politeness). 〜てはいけない is a firm prohibition — 'must not / not allowed.' One asks you to take care; the other lays down a rule. 〜な Both forbid, but at opposite ends of politeness: 〜な barks 'don't!' (rough), while ないようにしてください politely asks you to make sure you don't.
Notes
- The affirmative 〜ようにしてください means 'please make sure to ~' (毎日運動するようにしてください = 'please be sure to exercise every day').
