Easily confused with
に違いない に違いない is a reasoned 'must be', inferred from evidence; に決まっている is more emotional and subjective — 'obviously, no question about it', often impatient or dismissive of any doubt. に決まっている sounds more certain (and more casual) than に違いない. はずだ はずだ is a measured logical expectation ('it should be ~'); に決まっている brooks no argument ('it's got to be ~') and carries the speaker's strong personal conviction.
Notes
- 決まる = 'to be decided', so に決まっている literally 'it's settled that ~'. The tone is assertive and can be brusque — fine among friends, but it can feel pushy when overriding someone's doubt.
