Easily confused with
以外 以外 is the everyday word for 'other than' (彼以外); のほか(に)(は)〜ない is the slightly more formal frame that closes with a negative to mean 'none but ~.' ほか Bare ほか / そのほか means 'other / besides'; のほか(に)(は)〜ない pairs ほか with a negative predicate to exclude all alternatives. しかない しかない attaches a negative directly ('only ~'); のほか(に)(は)〜ない keeps the named item positive and negates the rest ('no one/nothing besides it').
