particle N4 common casualpolitewritten
〜の中で — among / of all ~
〜の中で ・ のなかで
Meaning
- among ~ / of all ~ / within ~ — sets the group or range from which something is singled out
の中で marks the set you're choosing or comparing within — 'out of all these'. It's the standard setup for a superlative or a pick: クラスの中で… ('of everyone in the class…'). For a category rather than a listed group, 〜の中でも ('even among ~') stresses standing out. The literal 'inside' meaning (箱の中で, 'inside the box') is the same word used spatially.
Key sentence

Of everyone in the class, he is the tallest.
