When you can't use it
- The outcome is contrary to fact — it did NOT actually happen. The result clause normally takes ところだった (past), and the pattern pairs naturally with 危うく or もう少しで ('nearly').
Easily confused with
〜ところだった ところだった on its own already means 'was about to / almost ~.' This pattern simply supplies the explicit たら-condition that triggers the near-miss: 'if X (had happened), then Y would have.' 〜そうになる そうになる ('almost ~ed') reports an involuntary near-miss with no stated condition. たら〜ところだ frames the near-outcome as the consequence of a specific hypothetical that didn't occur.
