Easily confused with
ように ように expresses 'so that / in the manner of' and can be a goal or a loose resemblance (見えるように, 'so it can be seen'); 通りに asserts an *exact* match to a stated model — the same as the instruction, prediction, or pattern, no deviation. まま まま = leaving a state *unchanged* (言われたまま, passively, without acting further); 通りに = actively reproducing something *exactly* as specified.
Notes
- After a noun it often fuses without に as 〜どおり (時間どおり 'on time', 計画どおり 'as planned'), where 通り voices to どおり.
