やっと ついに reports the culmination of a long process (neutral or dramatic); やっと adds the speaker's personal relief that it finally happened. とうとう Near-synonyms for a long-awaited result, but とうとう leans toward a regrettable or inevitable end; ついに is a more neutral climax.
