〜は〜で有名 ・ はでゆうめい
Meaning
- A is famous for B — names a topic A and the thing B (a product, feature, event) it is well known for
Key sentence
京都は古いお寺で有名だ。

Formation
| Attaches to | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Topic noun (は) + the thing it's known for (で) + 有名 | Aは Bで有名だ | この町はラーメンで有名だ |
Examples
あの店はケーキがおいしいことで有名だ。
That shop is famous for its delicious cakes.
彼は厳しい指導で有名な先生だ。
He's a teacher famous for his strict instruction.
When you can't use it
- The thing one is famous *for* takes で, not を or に: ×「お寺を有名」. To say famous *as* a category, use として (画家として有名).
Notes
- When B is a whole clause, nominalize it with こと: 〜ことで有名 ('famous for the fact that ~'). 有名 is a な-adjective, so before a noun it's 有名な.
