connective N1 uncommon writtenliterary
Builds on 〜如何(だ)
Meaning
- depending on ~ / according to how ~ is — the formal connective form of 如何, with the outcome hinging on the named factor
如何 + で turns 'the state of X' into 'depending on the state of X, the result varies'. 検査の結果いかんで、治療方針が決まる ('depending on the test results, the course of treatment will be decided'). It's the stiff, written equivalent of 次第で. The variants 如何によって(は) mean the same; 如何によらず / 如何にかかわらず flip it to 'regardless of ~'.
Key sentence
Depending on how it is handled from here, the company's credibility will be made or broken.
Formation
| Attaches to | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
When: Formal/written; the following clause states a result that swings with the named factor. いかんでは singles out one possible branch ('depending on the case, it might even ~').

Depending on the grades, the scholarship may even be discontinued.

Easily confused with
〜次第で Same meaning, different register: 次第で is the standard formal 'depending on'; いかんで is stiffer and more bureaucratic/literary, common in official and written contexts. によって によって in its 'varies-by' sense is the neutral everyday 'differs depending on'; いかんで stresses that the *outcome hinges on the nature of* the factor, in formal writing. にかかわらず Opposite logic: いかんで means the result *depends on* the factor; いかんにかかわらず / にかかわらず means the result holds *regardless of* it.
Notes
- All built on 如何 ('the state of ~'). Watch the polarity: 〜いかんで = depends on; 〜いかんによらず/にかかわらず = regardless of.
