Meaning

なあ is な with the vowel held, and the length is the feeling — it makes an exclamation heartfelt. すごいなあ isn't just 'amazing' but 'wow, that's amazing'. With 〜たい or 〜といい it becomes wistful: a wish you're savouring rather than stating.
