Easily confused with
けど Plain けど is a straightforward 'but/although.' んだけど adds the explanatory んだ, so it sets up your situation and trails off softly to invite a response — the go-to way to broach a request or inquiry rather than to state a contrast. 〜んだ／のだ んだけど is built on the explanatory んだ (のだ): it frames what follows as background the listener should take into account, then けど leaves room for their reaction.
Notes
- The polite version is んですけど. It very often trails off (…) instead of finishing the contrast — the listener is expected to pick up the cue and respond.
