Examples
参加者のうち、半分が学生だった。
Of the participants, half were students.
今年のうちに引っ越したい。
I want to move sometime within this year.
Easily confused with
の中で Nearly interchangeable when selecting a superlative from a group; の中で is the everyday choice and works for physical containers too, while のうちで leans abstract (sets, periods, counts). 〜うちに うちに = 'while a state still lasts / before it changes' (a time window for acting); のうち(で) = 'among the members of a set' (selection). Same うち, different jobs.
Notes
- Dropping で gives のうちに for a time span: 今日のうちに ('within today, before the day ends').
