When you can't use it
- The trailing のに carries the regret 'but (it's not so)'; it laments a current reality the speaker can't change. Without のに, 〜たらいい is plain advice or hope ('it'd be good if ~').
Easily confused with
〜ばいい 〜ばいい / たらいい states a positive suggestion or hope ('you could just ~ / it'd be good if ~'); たらいいのに adds のに to make it a wistful 'I wish, but it isn't so'. 〜ばよかった ばよかった is regret about the PAST ('I should have ~'); たらいいのに is a wish about the present or future state ('I wish it were ~ now'). 〜といい といい is a plain hope for an outcome you don't control ('I hope ~'); たらいいのに adds the rueful のに — the hope plus disappointment that reality differs.
