When you can't use it
- The main clause is usually a realisation, discovery, or newly-unlocked ability — something one couldn't grasp beforehand; it isn't used for a plain time sequence ('after I ate, I left').
Easily confused with
〜てから てから is a neutral 'after ~' time order; てはじめて adds 'and not until then' — the second event was impossible or unrealised until the first occurred. 〜てこそ Both single out one action as decisive. てはじめて = 'only after X did Y become true/clear' (often a realisation); てこそ = 'only BY doing X is Y achieved' (X is the necessary means).
