Meaning

When: Plain volitional is casual ('let's'); ましょう is the polite equivalent. Often paired with とする / とおもう for attempt or intention.

When you can't use it
- 〜ようとする takes only volitional (controllable) verbs; a potential or spontaneous verb is unnatural (×できようとする, ×わかろうとする).
