Formation

When: Standard-Japanese わ with a rising/level tone is gentle, traditionally women's speech; it softens an assertion rather than pushing it on the listener. (A separate, gruff falling-tone わ is used by men, especially in Kansai.)

Examples

困こまったわ、財布さいふを忘わすれちゃった。

Oh no, I've forgotten my wallet.

本当ほんとうにうれしいわ。

I'm really happy.

Easily confused with

よよ asserts information to the listener fairly directly; わ keeps the emphasis inward and gentle ('I feel ~'), softening rather than informing. ねね seeks the listener's agreement ('right?'); わ expresses the speaker's own feeling and doesn't ask for confirmation (they often combine as わね).

Notes

The gentle feminine わ is now somewhat stereotyped/dated in casual speech but still common in soft or older registers.
