When you can't use it
- Describes deliberately treating reality as other than it is. With する it's an active choice ('I'll pretend ~'); ことにしておく sets up the pretence in advance for later convenience.
Easily confused with
〜ふりをする ふりをする acts out an appearance in the moment (寝たふりをする 'pretend to be asleep'). たことにする fixes the record — it agrees to treat a (non-)event as fact, often retroactively, regardless of any performance. 〜ことにする Vる + ことにする = 'decide to do ~' (a real resolution). V-た + ことにする = 'pretend ~ happened' (a fiction). The tense of the verb flips it from decision to make-believe. 〜かのようだ かのようだ is an observer's simile ('as if ~'), describing how something seems. たことにする is a chosen fiction that the speaker decides to treat as true.
