- thank you for ~ing — thanks for an action someone did *for your benefit*, marked by くれて
The くれて is the heart of it: it frames the action as a favour done *to/for me*, so the gratitude lands on the kindness, not just the act. 来てくれてありがとう ('thanks for coming') feels warmer than a bare 来てありがとう. For a superior, raise it to 〜てくださってありがとうございます or 〜ていただきありがとうございます.

Easily confused with
〜てすみません Same 'て-form + reaction' shape, opposite social move: てくれてありがとう thanks for a kindness; てすみません apologizes for a trouble. くれて (favour) vs the apology's cause. くれる くれる alone marks 'gives me (a favour)'; てくれてありがとう builds the fixed thanks formula on top of its て-form, directing gratitude at that favour.
Notes
- Drop くれて (〜てありがとう) and you thank the action plainly; keep くれて to stress it was done *for you* — the more natural, warmer choice in most thanks.
